Anatomy of a Photo Shoot
Why a “1-Hour Shoot” Takes a Whole Lot More Than One Hour
When clients hear “1-hour photoshoot,” it’s easy to assume it’s a quick and simple process: show up, snap a few photos, and call it a day. But the truth is, that one hour behind the lens is just the tip of the iceberg.
Behind every finished gallery is a detailed and time-consuming process that ensures you get quality images you’ll be proud to share. Here's a look behind the scenes at what really goes into a standard 1-hour session.
Pre-Shoot: Planning the Vision
Time Invested: 30–60 minutes
It starts with a consultation. Whether it’s a phone call, email exchange, or in-person meeting, this is where we discuss:
• Your goals for the shoot
• Location preferences
• Wardrobe suggestions
• Style and tone (e.g., candid, posed, moody, vibrant)
• Specific requests or must-have shots
This helps ensure we're aligned and fully prepared, reducing surprises and maximizing the shoot time.
Travel Time
Time Invested: 30–90 minutes (round trip)
Traveling to the shoot location is another key part of the time investment. Even local shoots often involve up to 45 minutes round-trip, and sometimes more if scouting is involved ahead of time.
The Photoshoot
Time Invested: 1 hour
This is the visible part — the time when you and I are working together to create great images. It includes setup, posing guidance, adjustments for lighting, and shooting in multiple locations or angles.
Post-Shoot: Reviewing & Selecting Proofs
Time Invested: 1–2 hours
Once the session is complete, the real behind-the-scenes work begins. This stage involves:
• Uploading and backing up raw image files
• Reviewing every single image taken during the shoot
• Deleting outtakes (blinks, motion blur, missed focus)
• Selecting the best images to present as proofs
This curation process is meticulous and creative — we want to showcase only the strongest representations of your session.
Delivering Proofs to the Client
Time Invested: 15–30 minutes
Your proof gallery is then uploaded to a secure, private online portal. This gives you the opportunity to review and select your favorite images for final editing.
Final Editing & Retouching
Time Invested: 15–30 minutes per selected image
Once you’ve chosen your favorites, each selected image goes through an in-depth editing process. This includes:
• Color correction
• Exposure balancing
• Skin retouching (if applicable)
• Background clean-up
• Artistic enhancements based on the shoot’s style
If you select 10 images, that’s a minimum of 2.5–5 hours of editing time alone.
Delivering the Final Images
Time Invested: 15–30 minutes
Final images are uploaded in high resolution and web-ready formats to your private online gallery. This includes organizing, exporting, and double-checking quality before sending you the final link.
Total Time Investment for a “1-Hour” Shoot:
Task Estimated Time
Pre-shoot consultation 0.5–1 hour
Travel (round trip) 0.5–1.5 hours
Photoshoot 1 hour
Reviewing & selecting proofs 1–2 hours
Uploading & delivering proofs 0.25–0.5 hours
Editing (10 images) 2.5–5 hours
Delivering final gallery 0.25–0.5 hours
Total 6.5–11.5 hours
The Bottom Line
So, while the session itself might take only an hour, the full photography experience requires anywhere from 6 to 12 hours of work behind the scenes. It’s this level of attention, professionalism, and care that ensures your final images are polished, high-quality, and reflective of your vision.
Photography is more than just clicking a button — it’s a craft, an experience, and a commitment to quality. And when you book a professional shoot, you’re investing in all of that.
